Why Reading Matters
Reading with your child is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to support their development.
It is not just about learning to read words on a page. Reading helps children build language, confidence, imagination, learning skills and connection with the people around them.
And it does not need to be perfect. A few minutes together with a book, talking about pictures, or rereading the same favourite story all count.
How reading supports your child
Books help children learn language by exposing them to new words, ideas and sentence structures they may not hear in everyday conversations. This supports their understanding, communication and ability to express themselves.
Reading together also builds early literacy skills long before children can read independently. Through books, children begin to understand how stories work, notice letters and sounds, recognise rhyme, and learn that print carries meaning.
Stories also help children learn about the world. They encourage curiosity, imagination and thinking skills such as predicting what might happen next or making sense of new ideas. These skills support learning in all areas of life.
Just as importantly, reading together builds connection. These shared moments create closeness and routine, and often become special times of the day. Books can also help children explore feelings, friendships and new experiences in a safe and supported way.
What reading can look like at home
There is no “right way” to read together. Children do not need to sit still or listen perfectly for reading to be valuable.
Some children may:
talk through the story
skip pages
move around while listening
choose the same book over and over again
All of this is still learning.
The goal is to keep reading enjoyable and relaxed.
Easy ways to build reading into everyday life
You do not need lots of time or special resources. Small, regular moments make the biggest difference.
You might:
read a book before bed
talk about pictures in books
sing nursery rhymes and songs
visit the library together
let your child choose books they enjoy
keep books where they can easily access them
Reading together helps children build strong foundations for language, learning and connection. Most importantly, it helps them enjoy books and develop positive experiences with reading that can last a lifetime.
